Lakeside Refrigerated Services of Swedesboro, N.J., has recalled more than 43,000 pounds of ground beef. According to a statement from the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the recall is due to a possible E. coli O157:H7 contamination. The ground beef was sold at Walmart and other retailers under the brand names Marketside Butcher and Thomas Farms.

The particular packages of recalled ground beef were packaged on June 1 and shipped nationwide. The affected packages have an establishment number — EST. 46841 — inside the USDA mark of inspection on each package.

This recall is classified as a Class I recall, which the agency classifies as “…a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.” It’s also listed as a “high” risk to health.

The possible contamination was discovered during routine food safety inspections. To date, no customers have reported illness as a result of consuming the meat.

If you have meat that is part of the recall, you should throw away the meat or return it to the place of purchase, the USDA says. Do not eat it. Be sure to check your freezer as well for stored meat.

An E. coli infection can cause stomach cramps, dehydration, vomiting, blood stools, and diarrhea. Symptoms typically appear three to four days after exposure. In severe cases, kidney failure is also a possible complication of an infection. Thoroughly cooking any meat reduces your risk of exposure.
